The Real Teacher

So… you wanna know more about me, eh?!  Alright… well, here goes:

I was born and raised in Davenport, IA. I grew up in a wonderful family and had a really normal life.  Everyone told me I should be a teacher when I grew up, but I really wanted to be a Veterinarian (even though I think that deep down I wanted to be a teacher).

Long story short, I ended up going to a great college, College of the Ozarks, near Branson, MO.   I was undecided in my major until the end of my sophomore year (when the Registrar’s Office was breathing down my neck) and out of exasperation and desperation, I chose the one major that was the least of the evils (if you will… and you will!) 😉 So, I picked Elementary Education.  Little did I know at the time, but it turned out to be the right decision for me!

After college, I was hired by a nearby school district, and that is where I’ve taught for the last almost 6 years.  The first 5 years at my school, I taught Gifted and Talented, Title 1 Reading, Spanish, and Dramatic Performances.  This year, however, due to all of the lovely budget cuts by the government, they had to eliminate some of my positions and merge the others with another teacher.  Due to my elementary education certification, they were able to still maintain my job as a 4th grade classroom teacher.

Let me tell you that this has not been an easy adjustment- it’s gosh dang hard to be a first year teacher all over again!!! But, I am blessed by the fact that I’ve had 5 years prior teaching experience, so that has definitely helped! This year of my career is what gave me the inspiration to start this blog.  I truly believe that we teachers should SHARE.  Isn’t that what we always tell kids? Why keep something to yourself if you can help others from having to go through the same thing you went through to create it?

My goal is to help all those teachers out there in need of help from the newbies who are just starting their classroom to the veterans who got it goin’ on, but want to learn some cool new ideas to keep things fresh! 🙂 There will be something for everyone on the blog!
